One other point that hierarchies get a bad rap is that society increasingly views hierarchies as hierarchies of power. While it is true that those at the top of a hierarchy will possess more power, it fails to recognize that hierarchies are also formed based on consensus AND competence.

I agree that there is no true flat organization, and I also want to add that there shouldn't be. We should probably organize ourselves into teams where people can play to their strengths and others can cover their weaknesses. Different positions in a hierarchy should have different responsibilities and goals, and rewards should increase with seniority in the hierarchy.
